Elimination Of Letter O And Addition Of Leading Zero

New Passport Numbering System in Germany

Elimination of Letter "O" and Addition of Leading Zero

The German government has implemented a new numbering system for passports, introducing significant changes to the format of document identification. This revised system aims to enhance security and prevent fraudulent activities.

Key Features:

  • Exclusion of Letter "O": To avoid confusion with the number "0", the letter "O" has been excluded from the document numbers to minimize potential errors.
  • Leading Zero: All document numbers will now contain an additional leading zero, making them nine digits long. This modification ensures consistency and ease of identification.

These modifications to the passport numbering system apply to both regular passports and electronic passports (ePass), which were introduced in Germany on November 1, 2005.
